Things to Let Go Of

A step in the right direction for SELF CARE

By Jeffrey Willey Macaroni KID Winston-Salem Publisher October 28, 2023

I started making this list after I watched some things in my life start to consume me: my energy, my time, and my relationships.  It was time for the rubber to meet the pavement, so I recommitted my well-being to myself. Self-care often involves not only adopting positive habits but also letting go of negative ones. Here's my list of things to I wanted to look at and consider letting go of in order to improve my own self-care:

  1. Self-Criticism: Stop being overly critical of yourself. Practice self-compassion instead.
  2. Perfectionism: Understand that it's okay not to be perfect. Aim for progress, not perfection.
  3. Toxic Relationships: Let go of people who drain your energy or bring negativity into your life.
  4. Excessive Screen Time: Reduce the time spent on screens and social media to create space for more meaningful activities.
  5. Comparing Yourself to Others: Focus on your own journey and achievements rather than constantly comparing yourself to others.
  6. Unrealistic Expectations: Set achievable goals and expectations for yourself, and don't set the bar too high.
  7. Unhealthy Habits: Let go of vices like smoking, co-dependency, or unhealthy eating patterns.
  8. Clutter: Declutter your physical space to create a more peaceful and organized environment.
  9. Grudges and Resentment: Holding onto grudges and resentment can be toxic. Forgive and move on for your own well-being.
  10. Negative Self-Talk: Challenge and replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations and empowering thoughts.
  11. Overcommitting: Stop saying yes to everything and learn to set boundaries to protect your time and energy.
  12. Overworking: Recognize the importance of work-life balance and avoid overworking yourself.
  13. Guilt and Regret: Let go of past mistakes and regrets. Learn from them and move forward.
  14. Worrying about the Future: Focus on the present moment and don't obsess over the future, which you can't control.
  15. People-Pleasing: Prioritize your own needs and well-being instead of constantly trying to please others.
  16. Negative News Consumption: Limit exposure to negative news and choose more uplifting content.
  17. Unrealistic Body Image: Accept and love your body as it is, rather than striving for an unrealistic ideal.
  18. Overthinking: Release the need to overanalyze every situation and practice mindfulness to stay in the moment.
  19. Procrastination: Work on breaking the habit of procrastination to reduce stress and anxiety.
  20. Stressful Obligations: Reevaluate your commitments and eliminate those that are causing unnecessary stress.
  21. Guilt for Taking Time for Yourself: Understand that self-care is not selfish; it's essential for your well-being.
  22. Need for Approval: Stop seeking validation and approval from others; focus on self-validation.
  23. Fears and Doubts: Let go of limiting beliefs and self-doubt. Challenge and reframe negative thoughts.
  24. Unrealistic Perfectionism: Accept that nobody is perfect and embrace your imperfections.
  25. Overconsumption of Unhealthy Food and Drink: Reduce your intake of junk food, sugary beverages, and excessive caffeine.

Remember that self-care is a personal journey, and the process of letting go can take time. Start with small steps and be patient with yourself as you work on releasing these negative aspects of your life.  This is my list; yours may look totally different.
