Supporting career choices and our children who make them!

10 Ways to encourage children.

The other day, I was talking with Dooduh, about what he wanted to do when he was a grown man. This spunky 8-year-old turned to me and said, "I'm going to be a rapper!"  I laughed, and to get a rise out of him, I said, "Like a birthday and Christmas gift wrapper?"  I received the infamous rolling of the eyes, and he went about his business. Supporting a child's choice of career is essential for their personal growth, happiness, and success in life. Naturally, I did what any parent would do: I dug out the big Bluetooth speaker and attached the microphone.  Dooduh's eyes got big, and he went to town doing his rap business as I finished up a long-overdue project I had been working on. As a parent or guardian, your role is to guide and encourage them to explore their interests and passions while providing the necessary support and resources. Here are some tips on how to support your child's career choice:

  1. Open communication: Listen actively to your child when they express their interests and career aspirations. Encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings openly and without judgment. Engage in conversations about different career paths and options to understand their motivations better.
  2. Encourage exploration: Allow your child to explore various interests and activities. Exposure to different experiences can help them discover their strengths and passions. Attend career fairs, workshops, or seminars with your child to expose them to different professions and industries.
  3. Be supportive: Avoid pressuring your child into a specific career path or projecting your aspirations onto them. Instead, show genuine support for their choices and let them know you believe in their abilities.
  4. Research together: Help your child research the careers they are interested in. Look for information on educational requirements, job outlook, potential earnings, and work environments. Understanding the pros and cons of different career options can be empowering for your child.
  5. Encourage education and skill development: Ensure that your child receives a well-rounded education and has opportunities to develop essential skills for their chosen career path. Support their involvement in extracurricular activities, internships, or volunteer work related to their interests.
  6. Foster independence: As your child matures, encourage them to take ownership of their career choices. Allow them to make decisions, learn from their experiences, and understand the consequences of their actions.
  7. Seek mentorship: Help your child connect with mentors or professionals in their desired field. Mentors can provide valuable guidance and insights, motivating your child to pursue their goals with more determination.
  8. Remain positive during setbacks: Not every path is smooth, and your child may encounter obstacles along the way. Be there to support them during challenging times and help them see setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning.
  9. Emphasize values and passion: Encourage your child to consider their values and passions when choosing a career. A fulfilling career aligns with their interests and brings a sense of purpose to their lives.
  10. Keep an open mind: Careers and industries are constantly evolving. Be open to your child exploring unconventional or emerging career paths that might not have been as well-known when you were growing up.

Remember that career choices are personal and can change over time. Your primary role is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment that allows your child to explore, learn, and grow into the person they want to become.
