Will Greg blow his big shot?

In BIG SHOT, Greg Heffley and sports just don’t mix. After a disastrous field day competition at school, Greg decides that when it comes to his athletic career, he’s officially retired. But after his mom urges him to give sports one more chance, he reluctantly agrees to sign up for basketball.

Tryouts are a mess, and Greg is sure he won’t make the cut. But he unexpectedly lands a spot on the worst team (think Charlie Brown and his baseball team). His team is not any good, and as they continue the season, their chances of winning even a single game look slim. But in sports, anything can happen. When everything is on the line and the ball is in Greg’s hands, will he rise to the occasion? Or will he blow his big shot?

A coach's perspective

While reading the book to the kids at storytime, I asked questions like “What do you think will happen if his team loses? How important is winning every game?” and the kids were very interactive.

We invited special guest Coach Steve Edmiston, the boys basketball coach for Prairie Grove High School in Prairie Grove, Ark. He brought one of his players and the two of them talked to the kids in attendance about the importance of showing up, bringing your best effort, and being a team player.

Wimpy Kid series makes reading fun for ALL kids

The kids colored Wimpy Kid activity sheets and we gave out copies of the book as prizes. The kids who won were really excited to get started on reading the book at home. One mom mentioned to me that her son doesn’t usually enjoy reading, but he loves the Wimpy Kid series and is always excited to read the latest book in the series!

One nice thing about the illustrations in the Wimpy Kid series is that even if a kid isn’t a strong reader, they can use the drawings to help make more sense of the words. These books and their illustrations and humor help make reading fun for kids.

That makes this brand-new instant #1 bestseller, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: BIG SHOT! a sure SCORE!
