How To Encourage Learning During The Summer

By Kimberly Wright - Publisher & Editor of Greensboro Macaroni Kid May 26, 2017

Summer learning can be challenging however it is truly beneficial. I feel like every school ages student should continue to absorb knowledge during the summer and keep the learning momentum flowing. Yes, everyone goes into summer mode of relaxation and summer fun after school is dismissed for summer however here are ways to encourage learning over the summer and keep the learning momentum flowing. There are so many proven benefits to summer learning  and the National Summer Learning Association presents some interesting facts. I have my own reasons for encouraging summer learning and a few of my favorites are below.

Reading

Encourage reading to increase reading skills and knowledge. This can also help them be ahead when school starts again. How can you encourage reading during the summer?

  • Get the reading list for the next school year.

  • Have your student participate in a local reading club with the local library or search for local groups.

  • Ask for a weekly or bi-weekly book report to be given to you.

  • Invest less than $20 on a Summer Bridge Activities Book . This is an excellent resource for preparation of next year.

  • Subscribe to magazines of interest just for them. Ex: Sports Illustrated for Kid, Teen Vogue, Highlights, National Geographic

Math

Math is a skill you can lose if you do not use it on a regular basis. Summers are no different and you should stay in practice by using what you have learned. No matter what grade level or Math level you are on there are definitely ways to keep in practice over the summer. How can you encourage Math activities during the summer?

  • Invest in  Summer Bridge Activities Book.  This is less than $20 and they even have one just for Math.

  • Find a complimentary online program and let them practice.

  • Have work sessions with their siblings or friends.

  • Find a local tutor.

Arts

Some schools have removed their arts programs however you can keep art alive in your child. Creatives souls need nurturing and arts help the world go round through cultural and diverse celebrations. How can you encourage Arts activities during the summer?

Writing

Writing can always be enhanced during the summer. Since there is less pressure of deadlines and format have fun with writing and encourage these writing practices.

  • Have them recap a trip by writing an essay.

  • Have your child write a story about your family and a fun time the family recently had.

  • Have you child write a book report.

Foreign Language

Speaking a foreign language is becoming more than luxury. It is becoming a necessity in some industries and settings therefore I challenge everyone to know at least speak the basics of an additional language. As a matter of fact challenge them to learn the basics of two foreign languages over the summer. Learn how to speak it and read it. I suggest English, Spanish, French, Chinese, German, Italian and Korean to select from for starters.

As you can see there are many ways to encourage learning over the summers. Also, remember traveling is one of the best forms of education. So whether you are taking day trips, overnight trips or summer long trips remember to encourage and embrace learning throughout the summer.
